This is an opportunity for piano students to perform selection from the vast repertoire of Sonatinas and Sonatas, as well as a contrasting piece.
Students will perform in a recital,
while an adjudicator evaluates their memorized performance.
Students who are awarded a "Superior" rating will receive a medal.

Location:
Downtown Piano Works
74 South Market Street, Frederick MD 21701
(located on the corner of S. Market & All Saints St.)

Time:
starting at 9:00am and continuing throughout the day

Registration and Deadlines:
Teachers: Please write one check from your studio (payable to FCMTA) and submit with the FCMTA Sonata Festival 2012 Registration Form by February 18th.

Fees:
$12.00 per student for FCMTA members
$15.00 per student for non-members

Repertoire:
Music must be selected from the FCMTA Sonatina & Sonata Festival Repertoire List. Repertoire for the 2nd (contrasting) piece is teacher's choice (but it must be the same level of difficulty as the Sonatina/Sonata). The student's repertoire must not exceed 10 minutes total. Advanced level students time limit is 15 minutes.

Rules and Requirements:

  • Students must play by memory one sonatina or sonata movement (from the official Festival Repertoire List) and one contrasting piece. (The teacher may choose to use editions other than those on the list, but the music must remain intact: no simplified or shortened versions will be acceptable.)
  • The contrasting piece is teachers choice, provided it is the same level of difficulty as the sonatina/sonata; it must also be in a contrasting style and time period. The only exception is for the Elementary and Late Elementary levels, for which students may choose a second piece form the same time period, but it should contrast in style with their sonatina choice.
  • Each student is to have his/her copy of the original music ready to present to the judge. Students must bring their music with measures numbered for the adjudicator to use during their performance. Students cannot hope that a brother, sister, friend or teacher will be finished with the music in another class in time for his/her recital. Music must be ready upon arrival. STUDENTS WITH PHOTOCOPIED MUSIC WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FROM THE COMPETITION. Music printed from purchased CD files or electronically purchased will be treated as original music.
  • Repeats are generally not to be taken in the sonata or sonatina movement, except for short repeats (e.g. 8-16 measures), needed to balance form. At the discretion of the teacher, repeats may be used in the contrasting piece, if it serves to enhance the music. Both D.S. and D.C. should be taken as indicated in both pieces.
  • There is no eating or drinking in the recitals. All in attendance at the group recitals are expected to stay through the entire program.
  • Teachers who enter students must be available to help on the day of the test.
