Student Events

FCMTA sponsors several student events per year, as follows:

  • Halloween Recitals
  • Ensemble Festival
  • Holiday Performance
  • MSMTA Theory Testing
  • MSMTA Keyboard Musicianship Testing
  • Sonatina/Sonata Festival

  • Halloween Recitals

    Halloween Recitals are entry-level recitals for young students. Music should be theme appropriate. Memorization is not required. The students may wear their Halloween costumes. Certificates of participation are awarded.

    In 2018, the Halloween Recitals were held on Saturday, October 27. For information regarding the Halloween Recitals for 2019, please check back in September, 2019.
  • Ensemble Festival

    Ensemble Festival is a series of non-adjudicated recitals of ensemble performances. At least one performer in each ensemble must be a student of a current FCMTA teacher. Parents, teachers, and friends are welcome to join the ensemble. Students perform up to two pieces, within the given time allotted. Music does not have to be memorized. Students of FCMTA teachers are invited to join a “Group Ensemble Class” between recitals, which will include fun activities and improvised performances in an ensemble setting.

    In 2018, the Ensemble Festival was held on Saturday, November 10. For information regarding the Ensemble Festival for 2019, please check back in October, 2019.
  • Holiday Performance

    Holiday Performance comprises one or more recitals that take place at one of Frederick’s assisted-living facilities. Memorization is not required. The goal of this event is to bring the joy of music and children into the lives of senior citizens.

    In 2018, the Holiday Performance was held on Saturday, December 29. For information regarding the Holiday Performance for 2019, please check back in November, 2019.
  • MSMTA Theory Testing

    MSMTA Theory Testing is a state-wide program. One event is held in Frederick County. Students are prepared in music theory, ear-training, reading, etc. as outlined in the MSMTA Student Activities Handbook.

    2019 MSMTA Theory Testing

    Date: Saturday, February 23, 2019.

    Registration Deadline: Friday, January 11, 2019. Registration MUST BE DONE ONLINE at www.msmta.org.

    Location: Middletown United Methodist Church, 7108 Fern Circle, Middletown, MD 21769.

    Time: Begins in the morning; specific times TBD.

  • MSMTA Keyboard Musicianship Testing

    MSMTA Keyboard Musicianship Testing.  This is a state-wide program.  One event is held in Frederick County.  Students are prepared in various areas of keyboard playing, as outlined in the MSMTA Student Activities Handbook.

    2019 MSMTA Keyboard Musicianship Testing

    Date: Saturday, February 9, 2019.

    Registration Deadline: Saturday, December 29, 2018. Registration MUST BE DONE ONLINE at www.msmta.org. Permission slips to Kim Roberts by January 4, 2019.

    Location: Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, 15 W. Church Street, Frederick, MD.

    Time: Setup at 8:15. Testing from 9:00 - 1:00. Individual times assigned.

  • Sonatina/Sonata Festival

    Sonatina Festival is a series of adjudicated recitals. Students perform one sonatina or sonata movement and one contrasting piece. Both pieces are to be memorized. The teacher assigns the difficulty level. Certificates of Participation are awarded and the judges’ comments are given to the teachers.

    NOTE: Students must register through their teachers.

    2019 Sonatina/Sonata Festival

    Date: Saturday, March 23, 2019.

    Registration Deadline: Saturday, February 23, 2019.

    Location: Frederick Community College, Visual & Performing Arts Center, 7932 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.

    Time: All day. Individual times to be announced two weeks before the Festival.
